City & Guilds Approved Centre

SHEPHERDS CENTRE FOR BOOK ARTS

Shepherds have been running bookbinding classes since 1998. At that time the college courses were closing and as a working bindery we needed to find a way of training new members of staff. We soon discovered that our courses appealed to people from a wide range of ages and backgrounds; retired professionals, art students, designers, book collectors, even veterans returning from Afghanistan, all share a mutual love of this complex and fascinating craft.

Over the last fifteen years interest in our courses has continued to grow and we have developed a curriculum to match the needs of our customers and students. Our beginners’ course in particular has proved enormously popular. After only a few hours tuition students are already able to bind their first books.

This year we were delighted to become a City & Guilds Centre (known as Shepherds Centre for Book Arts). We are teaching a brand new City & Guilds curriculum which enables students to gain Awards and Certificates in bookbinding. There is no compulsion to register for a City & Guilds qualification when undertaking our courses but adding an internationally recognised qualification brings a new dimension of interest from students keen to develop professionally recognised vocational skills.

Of all the crafts, bookbinding commands a special place in people’s imagination. Everyone has a favourite book and in an increasingly digital age, appreciation of books as objects is clearly evident from the interest shown in our Victoria shop. Stand for a few minutes in our store and before long you will hear someone say ‘I would like to know how to bind a book’.

Our aim as a company is to make this wonderful craft accessible to a wider audience. The first level of our new City & Guilds curriculum will be published in book form and our basic ‘Beginners’ Notes’ are now available as a free download on our website HERE. We also have plans to expand our teaching locations in the coming months.
